Thirty Year Milestone

A milestone was set this month and I can't believe that I almost missed it.

Thirty years ago this month I photographed my first wedding. It was actually on July 10, 1981 in Murphysboro, IL. I still have the camera that I photographed the wedding with and I have recently been donated the wedding gown, courtesy of Gail Truitt, the bride!

It's amazing how fast time has gone by. I have met so many bride's and groom's over the years and tons of interesting people. People from all walks of life. I must say that photography has been one of the most fun things I have ever done.

I just pray that the good Lord gives me another thirty years to enjoy this God given talent.

Middle Of The Week

Can you believe it? It's Wednesday already! It's amazing how time flies when you are busy doing the things you love to do, or just busy in general.

This has been a full week of photo editing and marketing the business. Yeah, it is a lot of work but I love it. I can never get caught up on my work load though, but it keeps me young and off the streets. I don't know what else I would rather be doing with my life than being attuned to photography. It is my life and passion and I have been in love with photography ever since high school. Wow, that's a long time! You will just have to guess my age at this point.

Well I am going to get started with the rest of the week. It will be as busy as the beginning.

Father Greets Daughter

On occasion the bride will be greeted by her father before the wedding. On this particular occasion I was invited into the room where the two were about to meet for the first time. I try not to get to close to the pair as to keep their conversations private. One only knows what the father was telling his beautiful daughter at this particular moment. The bride; however, is listening very intently what her father has to say though.

The image was edited to b&w so that it would appear old and to give it character to match the moment frozen in time.

Sorry that I haven't been dedicated to keeping up with the blog. I have been slowly getting settled in our new location. The move has taken its toll on the business but things are starting to settle down now and it has extremely busy with several projects in the making.

Teaming up with Mr. Tuxedo & Bridal has been a welcome change and a challenge. I must say that it is really convienent being located to a Tuxedo and Bridal shop. I have met some beautiful people and have had the pleasure of photographing many of them.

For the longest time it has been a myth that TDP does only weddings. Well I am here to set the record straight. TDP does weddings, portraits, seniors, prom, families, pets and commercial. It has also been a rumor that TDP has gone out of business. Well, TDP is still in business and a live and well.

Sometimes change is a good thing. When we make change one is not sure at first if it was a good idea or not. You have to trust your instincts and follow through to find out.

There are some changes coming to Two Doves and I will announce the changes over the next couple of months. There is one major change that is about to take place and it should make a big impact on the business.

TDP in Review

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything to our blog. So much has happened over the past year that I don't know where to start.

First, I would like to say THANKS to all of our family and friends of Two Doves Photography for their past and present support. You mean the world to us and without you we would not exist.

Last year was a record breaking year with weddings. We were so busy shooting weddings and editing that we didn't have much time for anything else. We devoted most of our time with weddings but on occasion took on a few portrait sessions. This year we have been devoting more time to portraits, i.e. Seniors and Family sessions.

We have met a lot of wonderful people through our photography and have been blessed with their continuing friendship and support.

This year we are trying to grow the business even more. It has been a struggle at times but it has been paying off. There are some new things on the horizon and I will tell you about that later when it becomes a definite thing.

August 1, 2010 with be our 6th anniversary in the location we are in now. Please stop by some time and pay us a visit. We would love to meet you.

Congratulations to our newest US Navy Recruits!

I had the privilage of being onhand for graduation of the newest Navy recruits at the Recruit Training Command. Graduation was held on April 17, 2009 at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Chicago, IL. There were 10 divisions graduating for a total of 811 graduates. The ceremony was spectacular in every detail and thousands of parents and friends turned out for this most honorable event.

One of the recruits was my Stepson, Nicholas Page. According to Nicholas, it was a life changing choice he made to join the Armed Forces. He added that it was the best thing that he had ever done with his life. Nicholas is the son of Jamie Trammel and Thomas Page.

Congratulations Recruits on a JOB WELL DONE! We are all proud of your accomplishments and we thank you for defending and serving our great country.

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive?????

Why are Professional Photographers so expensive? In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 (actually more then what I charge) for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store? Here's why. Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part. For a two hour portrait session:- one hour of travel to and from the session- two hours of shooting- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive, 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs, 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours. You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour. For an eight hour wedding:- I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500/hour. Now for the expertise. Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc. And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself. Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.What about the cheap studios at the mall? Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for. The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spend $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door. Conclusion? We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store.

Hey Gang,

I haven't written anything for a long time so thought I would catch you up on what has been happening around here.

Thanks to you, our Two Doves Photography Family, we set two records for the year of 2008. October 2008 was our biggest month for weddings. We finished up with 13 wedding of which 5 were on one weekend. That was the other record set. It had been quite a year. Staffing has changed and TDP is moving forward at lightening speed.

On January 11, 2009, TDP hosted its Second Annual Circle of Friends Bridal Show. It has a huge success. You may have read about it in the Southern Illinoisan Newspaper. After the bridal show, our Lucky N Love winning couple exchanged their wedding vows. We congratulate Melissa and Lee Greathouse and wish them many years of marriage together.

The bridal show, and wedding combined, made for some high energy preparations. Our staff worked pretty much around the clock, the two weeks leading up to the show, getting our booth and other materials ready.

TDP participated in the Ever After Bridal Show in Marion the following weekend. I wish all of us could take R&R somewhere!

Prizes are not transferable, redeemable for cash or exchangeable for any other prize. All prizes must be redeemed within 60 days of the contest end date. 3. Eligibility and Limitations. Participants and winner(s) must be U.S. residents at least 18-years old as determined by the Company and reside in the Station’s Total Survey Area (TSA). By participating in the Contest, each participant and winner waives any and all claims of liability against the Company, its employees and agents, the Contest’s sponsors and their respective employees and agents, for any personal injury or loss which may occur from the conduct of, or participation in, the Contest, or from the use of any prize. In order to receive a prize, participants must sign an official waiver form provided by the Company.
6. Taxes. Any valuation of the prize(s) stated above is based on available information provided to the Company, and the value of any prize awarded to a winner may be reported for tax purposes as required by law. Uh, okay, I don't usually do a lot of bragging about my clients looking so good. Well, maybe just a little bit. Okay, you got me. I do brag a lot especially when someone is smoking hot. I know this is going to sound really pathetic after what I just said, but this Hottie, oops!!! Cute young lady happens to be my beautiful niece, Tiffany. This was Tiffany's first time to the studio and I don't know where she has been all this time but I think she needs to come back more often. Tiffany was amazing during her photo shoot and her photos are fantabulous. Have a peak at this future model.....

Please excuse our mess as we are moving into a new website. Our galleries are being migrated over to our new look and it will take a little time for the transition to be completed. During this time you may or may not find what you are looking for in the client proofing sections. Don't be alarmed! If this should happen, please give us a call. Sorry in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.

The transition over to our new site will take about a week. Progress has been slow because we are making our client image editing a priority over the move.

Because of our growing pains we are having our website once again up-graded to better serve our clients.

Within the next few short weeks we will be implimenting a new website with a much needed feature. A Shopping Cart! This will enable our clients to choose and order the photos they want with greater ease. You will be able to add photos to a Shopping Cart by selecting 'Add To Favorites' button. When you are finished just click on the Shopping Cart, fill in your personal information and then click 'Complete Order.' You will even have the option to pay by Pay Pal if you have a Pay Pal account. If you don't have a Pay Pal account you can create one online at http://www.paypal.com/. It is free to open an account and it is fast and easy to use. We are already using Pay Pal.

We will keep you up-dated on our progress as we get closer to a launch date.

Actually this cutie's name is Laura. My son, Jason, our secret model scout, recently scouted out this local beauty and brought her by the studio this morning for a few test shots. However, Laura's test session turned into a full blown session. She worked so well in front of the camera that I couldn't stop shooting. I am glad I didn't stop because I was able to get some really fantastic images.

Jesse was in the "not sure" mode when they arrived but before the session was over he was putty in my hands. As with most ladies, Katie was excited and ready to have fun. Jesse later admitted that he had a great time as well.

Meet Johanna! And, she is not just another pretty face. This beauty is one of a kind and the first time she walked into the studio, she had my attention and left me with a burning desire to photograph her. She looked fantastic in her street clothes, not to mention modeling attire. We discussed what style of photos she was looking for and she gave me a few ideas. Then, the creative side of the brain kicked in high gear. A couple days later, Johanna was back in the studio for her shoot. One click after another Johanna performed in front of the camera like a true pro.

The editing process was no easy task. Our staff was in awe at what we were seeing and in disbelief as to how someone could look so naturally beautiful. There was no imperfections that we could see in her. Just one great photograph after another.

Johanna came in to the studio this afternoon to pick up her proofs and she was very delighted in seeing herself in superstar mode. She was photographed exactly as she had wanted. Now, she has expressed an interest in coming back soon for another session.

Join in on the fun as the 'Committee to Get the Mayor Married' kicks off.

David More, of the Art Lovers Trading Company in Carbondale, and I have rounded up a committee to help get the Mayor of Carbondale married. It all started out when Carbondale's Mayor Brad Cole had his new year's resolution published in the Southern Illinoisan on January 1, 2007. His resolution was to fall in love, get engaged and get married within the next 12 months.

More hit me with the idea, a few days ago, of forming the committee and wanted my input on it. I thought it sounded like a lot of fun. It could be like the reality show, The Bachelor, only our version would be Carbondale style. More ran with the idea and has now spread like wild fire. Two local newspapers have picked up on the story and WSIL-TV 3 had a story about it a couple nights ago. Now WPSD-TV 6 wants to do a story.
